The ATEC’s two-yearly Statement of Strategic Priorities is expected to be published by 1 January 2027. The consultation process will commence in the second half of 2026.
Workplan
ATEC’s biennial workplan sets out what we are delivering, when, and why. It is our public commitment to the sector about where our efforts and focus will be in the short term. The workplan is reviewed regularly to ensure it aligns with emerging priorities and so the ATEC can respond when challenges and opportunities arise.
Our workplan for 2027-28 will be published later in 2026.
Statement of Strategic Priorities
ATEC will shape where Australian tertiary education needs to go, and how to get there, through a two-yearly Statement of Strategic Priorities (SSP). The ATEC Act 2026 requires an SSP every two years to set out the ATEC’s view of the short and medium-term direction for Australia’s tertiary education.
In May 2026, the ATEC released an interim Statement of Strategic Priorities to provide an initial view of key focus areas for the tertiary education system, and to guide the development of foundation mission based compacts for 2027 with eligible higher education providers.
In developing this interim SSP, the ATEC has considered the National Tertiary Education Objective, the objects of the ATEC Act and the letter of expectations issued to interim Commissioners by the Minister for Education, the Hon Jason Clare MP on 4 March 2026.
The first statutory SSP, covering the years 2027-28, will be published by 1 January 2027. A consultation process to guide the development of the SSP will commence in the second half of 2026.
