Legislation to establish the Australian Tertiary Education Commission (ATEC) passed through the House of Representatives today.

Professor Tom Calma AO and the Hon Fiona Nash have been appointed commissioners of the interim Australian Tertiary Education Commission (ATEC).

The terms of inaugural Australian Tertiary Education Commissioners Professor Mary O’Kane AC and Distinguished Professor Larissa Behrendt AO conclude at the end of this year.

On 26 November, the Australian Government introduced new legislation to formally establish the ATEC. This marks a significant step in implementing the recommendations of the Australian Universities Accord, with ATEC set to lead lasting reforms that will build a better and fairer tertiary education system for Australia.
